Southern Highway in Belize

The Southern Highway in Belize is now completely paved, and while it was long known as one of the worst roads (and the worst highway) in Belize, it is now actually one of the best roads.

The views of the Maya Mountains are quite beautiful from this highway while travelling from the region of Dangriga to the region of Punta Gorda

There is a reasonable amount of petrol stations available on the Southern Highway, but don’t try your luck on this road.

The Southern Highway used to have pot holes on every turn. The road would flood and you’d need a four wheel drive (and a lot of luck) to pass it without getting stuck. There were collapsed bridges where the rivers had washed away their foundations. With no street lighting, the Southern Highway was as most other Highways of Belize difficult to navigate at night.
