San Pedro Town, from fishing village to town status

San Pedro Town, located on the largest island of Belize, Ambergris Caye, is part of the Belize District of Belize. The town is located at the southern part of the island of Ambergris Caye with some smaller settlements at the north and south side. These settlements appear some times to be part of San Pedro Town.

This town has a population of about 13,381 according to the 2012 estimates and is the second largest town of Belize District (after the former capital Belize City). San Pedro is a 17 minute flight from Belize International Airport or a 75 minute boat ride from Belize City.

San Pedro Town was earlier a small fishing village, which has become a town due to the tourism to Ambergris Caye. The status of town was granted in 1984. Some of the many hotels and resorts in San Pedro are Captain Morgan’s Retreat and Sunbreeze Hotel

The inhabitants of San Pedro are know as San Pedranos. Most of them are fluent in both English and Spanish. Also a lot of inhabitants of San Pedro Town do speak the Kriol language, which is used a lot in Belize.
