Old Northern Highway in Belize

The Old Northern Highway in Belize was replaced by the Northern Highway, and it was left to deteriorate afterwards. It is a partially paved and partially unpaved road.

Once was this the main route from Belize City to Orange Walk Town and beyond. The Old Northern Highway is still the only road that leads to the Mayan Temple of Altun Ha, multiple villages in Belize and at least one resort.
The road conditions are reasonable, but expect to need a 4×4 during the rainy season or after some heavy rains. Also expect large sections of this road to be narrow. Be sure to fill the gas tank, as the Old Northern Highway has no gas service.
The Old Northern Highway is being upgraded with good gravel finish from the intersection with the Northern Highway to Altun Ha to make this Mayan ruin better accessible for tourists.
