Mopan River Resort, a former resort in Benque Viejo del Carmen, Belize

The Mopan River Resort was a well known resort in the Cayo District of Belize, where it was located in Benque Viejo del Carmen. It was located at the other site of the Mopan river and getting to the resort was only possible with a ferry. The resort was offering an all inclusive formula, which was cheaper than most other resorts in the neighborhood. Although there were some limitations in the options, a lot of guests were very satisfied with their stay.

The resort was located next to the Mopan River on 10 acres and all accommodations had a view of this river. The resort has a total of 9 cabanas and 3 suites which have a kitchenette added to the cabana, so the maximum capacity was 25 guests. While the resort was offering a standardized excursion program, the excursions mostly where with a maximum of 10 to 12 people in stead of an individual excursion.

Due to the location at the other side of the river from Benque Viejo del Carmen the resort is not a real jungle lodge. Although the resort is located on 10 acres, the complete plot is 85 acres, of which 75 acres could still be developed.

This resort opened in November 1999. Due to the death of the founder of the resort, the resort has been sold to new owners in 2007. These owners went back to their homecountry for personal reasons and they are trying to sell it since 2011. While the maintenance have not been taken care of during the last years, the resort has not the status more of once before.
