Macal River Camp in San Ignacio, Belize

Macal River Camp is located in the neighborhood of the twin towns San Ignacio and Santa Elena in the Cayo District of Belize. It consists of casitas, which are rented out relatively cheap and mostly as a group accommodation. Macal River Camp is able to use the amenities, facilities and tours of the resort Chaa Creek, which is at a 0.5 mile distance. The Lonely Planet selected the Macal River Camp at Chaa Creek as one of their recommended accommodation in Southwest of San Ignacio.

The Camp, as the Macal River Camp is also called, is located half a mile down the river from Chaa Creek. The Camp consists of 10 casitas with each two beds and a private porch and no electricity. The casitas share bathrooms with toilets and showers. Prices start at BZD 130 (USD 65) excluding 9% tax and 10% service charge per person per night including breakfast and dinner. Reviews for this site are not always good. Keep in mind that it is a budget accommodation which is situated remote in the jungle with some 100 uphill steps to the Chaa Creek lodge. Or as stated by the lodge: the river camp has been designed for outdoors people who enjoy rustic accommodations in a remote setting, where vehicle traffic at the Camp is restricted.
Part of the Camp is a central dining/ social area with a traditional Belizean and Mestizo cuisine. The Camp does not have a restaurant, but a determined menu with no choices. The cooking, as well the tending of the campsite and cabins and the leading of excursions is done by a local couple. Also a campfire is lit nightly.

The Camp was built to accommodate student groups and does that regularly. As a traveller you can end up being at the same time at the site as a group. Not everybody will like that. The Macal River Jungle Camp opened in 1993 as part of the lodge Chaa Creek
