Belmopan, the capital of Belize

Belmopan, situated in the Cayo District, is the capital city of Belize. In 2010 Belmopan had 16,451 residents.

Belmopan became the capital after the hurricane Hattie in 1961, which destructed almost Belize City, which was the former capital of Belize. Belmopan was constructed 80 kilometers (50 miles) inland from Belize City, just east of the Belize River. The government moved to Belmopan in 1970. The National Assembly Building should resemble a Pre-Columbian Maya temple. Belmopan is 76 metres (249 feet) above sea level.
